- Explain enough about the literary criticism theory to show the reader that you really understand the theory.
- Explain enough about the short story to show the reader that you really understand the story.
- Apply the theory to the story, using some of the language of the theory.
You can take whatever point of view you wish. Your goal is to demonstrate that you understand both theory and story and can work with both of them/link them together. Your "argument" is that your perspective is an appropriate perspective to take with that particular text.
Remember that you may revise your work as often as time allows. You can do it! You can be successful!
After view all 3 movies, I have decided to write my paper on the Truman movie we first watched in class.
ReplyDeleteI am also writing my paper on The Truman Show. I will be using the Reader-Response perspective. I was absorbed by the movie. It tells us to look around and break the spell that keeps us believing in the media-fabricated illusions of popular culture.
ReplyDeleteI am writting my paper on The Truman Show using psychologial criticism. The movie takes you through Truman's life and by analyzing his life using different approachs in psychology. Find answers to why does he want to be a traveler and to goto Fiji? and many more.
ReplyDeleteI am writing on the Matrix. I really wanted to do Run Lola Run but since I only seen it once i think I should write on something I can watch while I write. I'm going to use deconstruction. I think this will be a very interesting perspective to write from.
ReplyDeleteI am writing my paper on The Matrix, too. I am using mythological/archetypal criticism, which isn't in the book but is in the handout we received on the first day of class. I am using this theory because we spoke a lot about humans' perception of the truth and search for the truth in my philosophy class, and I love when two classes overlap. I could see so many similarities between what was discussed in philosophy and what was seen in The Matrix, I decided to combine the two. Hopefully the paper turns out alright! Good luck with all of your papers, and see you Saturday!

I have decided to write my paper on the movie "The Truman Show". I will be using the psychology method as I believe this will best suit this movie. Some of the questions and comments that pop into my mind as I watch this movie are, who would do something like that to a human being? What a waste of life for Truman. What kind of people would be willing to participate and lie to such a degree? Let's imagine for a second that this happened for real. These people being hired to "act" in the "Truman Show" are no longer acting... They are lying to Truman. What's their motivation? Money? Fame? to the expense of what? A human life? That is ever the top if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteReaders response was harder than I thought. I did my paper on "Riding the Doghouse" under the Reader's Response critcism except, I did not give my response. I thought I did. The teacher said to give my response and then go back to the text and find the supportive text that made me react that way. But what if the text trigers a response that is not directly connected to the text? Would that be a valid response? Well, I guess I will find out once I re-write my paper and get his response.
ReplyDeleteLearning about literary criticism and the different theories I now look at what I am reading with a different eye. I have enjoyed learning the different theories and have found writing about them challenging. The book Texts and Contexts explained the theories very well and was a great reference and tool to refer to. I enjoyed the three movies we watched and contemplating what criticism to apply to one of them.
ReplyDeleteI personally did not care for the choice of stories. Stephen King is a great writer but his books are not the genre I read. Therefore, as the editor of The Best American Short Stories 2007 I knew these stories may not be something I would want to read. The literary works were done well and it was easy to find a criticism to apply to the different stories. What I did not care for is most if not all the stories left a feeling of despair and a pit in my stomach.
On a good note I have learned a lot and found myself challenged which is always a good thing.
I hope this blog completes all my blogging. But all I want to say is that I have enjoyed this class, everyone have been really friendly and very helpful with the essays!! The only thing i was not fond of was the theory book because some theories were hard for me to understand. Other than that, thank you all for being cooperative, and thank you Professor Yablon for all your positive advices!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sue, I have really enjoyed learning about the different criticisms, some of them were quite difficult to implement and apply to the texts, but the fact that it was a challenge made it interesting. I found it particularly tough to implement the psychological criticism, maybe I just picked the wrong text. I also enjoyed reading the Mindset book, I will admit to feeling as if it would be a “hokey” self-help book like “The Secret” but I actually found this really interesting. It gave me a different on overcoming obstacles.
ReplyDeleteThe literary criticism theories are helped me see texts in a different light. While I found some of the criticisms more useful than others, they all provided a different way to decipher various aspects of a piece of literature. Even deconstruction, which i found particularly frustrating to understand and implement, gave me valuable insights into the smallest aspects of a text, breaking down a work word by word. Also, the short story selections were great. Overall, I liked the class; except the whole "Saturday afternoon class" thing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this class and although it went rather fast I feel that I am walking away with a good understanding on Literary Criticism as well as the importance of our "Mindset". My final essay was about the short story Riding the Dog House. This I believe worked well with Psychological Criticism.
ReplyDeleteHave a great summer everyone!
I really enjoyed this class! I loved all three movies, they really affected my conception of reality and they made me think. The short stories (that I read) were well-written and compelling. And, the six writing styles taught me how to be a better writer and how to look at text from various points of view. I hope everyone has a good summer, and good luck with other writing classes in the future!
